What is a Bloom Score? How We Rate POD Niche Demand
The Bloom Score is NicheBloom's proprietary demand rating system. Here's exactly how it works and why it matters for your POD business.
The Problem With Generic Demand Ratings
Most niche research tools tell you a niche is "popular" or "trending" without any context. Popular compared to what? Trending for how long? Is there still room for a new seller, or is it completely oversaturated?
We built the Bloom Score to give POD sellers a clearer, more actionable picture of niche demand — one that goes beyond simple popularity and actually helps you make better design decisions.
What is the Bloom Score?
The Bloom Score is a 1-5 demand rating system inspired by plant growth stages. Each score corresponds to a specific stage of niche development:
🌱 Sprouting (Score: 1)
The niche is brand new or extremely specific. Demand is low but so is competition. These are high-risk, high-reward opportunities — great for early movers who want to establish themselves before the crowd arrives. Not recommended for beginners.
🌿 Growing (Score: 2)
The niche is gaining real traction. You can see it emerging in search trends, Reddit discussions, and early Etsy sales. This is where smart sellers start positioning themselves — demand is real but competition is still manageable.
🌸 Blooming (Score: 3)
Solid, proven demand with an established buyer community. There's enough market for new sellers to compete effectively with good designs and strong optimization. The sweet spot for most POD sellers.
🌺 Thriving (Score: 4)
Strong demand and active sales across multiple platforms. Competition exists but quality and specificity can still win. These niches produce consistent, reliable income for sellers who execute well.
🌳 Peak Demand (Score: 5)
Maximum demand — this niche has a massive, passionate buyer community. Competition is fierce but the volume of buyers is so high that even a small slice of the market is profitable. Requires differentiation and strong execution.
How We Calculate the Bloom Score
For our curated library of 100+ niches, each Bloom Score is based on a combination of factors including search volume data, bestseller frequency on major POD platforms, Reddit and social media community size, and historical sales patterns.
For live scores — available on every niche detail page via the "Check Live Demand" button — we use real-time web search data from across Etsy, Reddit, news sources, and social media to generate a fresh demand rating based on what's actually happening right now.
How to Use Bloom Scores in Your Research
**Don't only target 🌳 Peak Demand niches.** The highest score doesn't always mean the best opportunity. A 🌳 niche with millions of competing designs may be harder to break into than a 🌸 niche with strong demand and less competition.
**Use 🌱 and 🌿 as early warning signals.** Low scores today can become high scores in six months. Sellers who establish themselves early in a 🌿 Growing niche often dominate it by the time it reaches 🌺 Thriving.
**Check live scores before launching.** Niche demand changes. A niche that was 🌳 Peak Demand in December may drop to 🌸 Blooming in March as seasonal demand fades. Always check the live score before committing to a new product line.
